The 52 marks a whole new era in the design of cruising catamarans, as indeed did its predecessor, the famed 500.
With its diamond-shaped vertical bows, bevelled hulls, its as if levitated deckhouse and tall rig, the 52 is no ordinary catamaran, but its originality goes a great deal further than just its "outer" appearance, or even its interior layout.
This Lagoon is the result of lengthy discussions between the architects at Van Peteghem-Lauriot Prévost (VPLP), the Italian Nauta Design agency and the Lagoon design department. These discussions led us to make some important and sometimes radical choices, while remaining faithful to what we believe in, in terms of elegance, comfort, safety, user friendliness and, it goes without saying, performance under sail.

MJM’s 35z offers what other outboards have sought to achieve- that delicate balance of performance and comfortable, all-weather boating. Two factors explain the achievement: MJM’s unique epoxy composite construction for a stronger, lighter and longer-lasting hull, and a seakindly Zurn-designed modified deep-V design with a greater waterline length-to-beam ratio of 3.5-to-1, versus the typical 2.7or 3-to-1 ratio. This further explains her delicate appetite- this 35 footer burns just 1.2 mpg with twin Merc Verado 350s pushing her at 35mph. Another plus: comfort at speeds approaching 50 mph. The 35z hull shape gains stability the faster it goes as lifting strakes and chine flats redirect wave and wake energy into effective stabilizing forces. Voila, sporty speed and handling, with all the cottage comforts.

In the late 1980’s, racing catamarans designers made the first cruising catamarans. Foremost among the designers are VPLP ( a French based naval architecture firm founded by Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost). Telestial Distraction is hull number one; the original “cruising cat”, restored to better than new condition over the past several years.
Why an early model Lagoon? The answer is simple: horsepower to weight. The ship is elegantly designed to provide spacious living, but it retains a racing-cat’s “v-hull” shape and lightweight. Displacement is 13 tons versus modern 55 foot boats weighing in at around 17-19 tons. The difference is performance. Lively acceleration. Speed to safely to outrun weather and get to your destination. Excellent sailing qualities and easy shiphandling with small crew.
The ship’s refit was thorough, repairing some items that had suffered the impacts of time and age, bringing them to better than new. The entire top deck, formerly cored in balsa is now cored in synthetic. New fiberglass decks vacuum laid for light weight and strength. All new wiring. All new plumbing. All new steering. All new batteries. New heads, sinks, toilets, ground tackle, and more. Main engines were “zero-timed” at overhaul to manufacturer original specs, and freshly painted. All new interior cabinetry from “tri-cell” light weight plywood. Over a million-dollars in “new”. NMEA2000 network backbone for maximum flexibility of monitoring and instrumentation.
